Mrunalini Nikte

I completed my undergraduate studies in architecture at PVP College of Architecture (VIT) in Pune. This period was instrumental in shaping my foundational skills and understanding of architectural principles. I led numerous projects that allowed me to explore various design philosophies and practical applications, including a notable community centre project that focused on sustainable design and social interaction. This project received recognition for its innovative use of space and materials.

My unwavering love and passion for interior design, especially the intricate details that make a space unique, motivated me to pursue further studies. Italy, with its rich history of art and design, was the perfect place to deepen my knowledge. I enrolled in a master’s program in interiors and furniture design, where I had the opportunity to study under some of the world’s leading designers and craftsmen. The exposure to Italy’s design heritage and modern innovations profoundly influenced my approach to design.

The inspiration for starting Chafa Home came from my deep-rooted love for creating beautiful, functional spaces. The name “Chafa” is derived from the Champa flower, which holds a special place in my heart. Growing up, the Champa tree in our garden was a symbol of beauty, resilience and grace. It inspired me to create spaces that bring these qualities into people’s lives. Chafa Home embodies the essence of this flower, offering design solutions that are elegant, endearing, and serene.

Establishing Chafa Home was a journey filled with both excitement and challenges. Starting out, I faced the common hurdles of any new business: securing clients, building a team, and establishing a brand identity. There were times when the path seemed daunting, but my unwavering belief in the power of good design kept me going. I overcame these challenges by staying true to my vision, continuously learning, and surrounding myself with supportive and talented individuals.

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly shaped my vision for Chafa Home. After spearheading the interior design and furniture designing departments at a renowned furniture brand in Bombay, I learnt the importance of adaptability and the need for creating versatile, multi-functional spaces. This experience reinforced my commitment to designing homes that not only look beautiful but also support the dynamic lifestyles of the clients.

Design Philosophy and Approach

My design philosophy is rooted in creating timeless, personalized spaces that enhance the quality of life. I believe in the power of design to transform not just spaces but also the lives of the clients.

My work is influenced by a blend of cultural heritage, modern aesthetics, and nature. The elegant simplicity of European Minimal design, the rich textures of Indian craftsmanship, and the functionality of Scandinavian interiors all inspire my creations.

To ensure each project meets the client’s vision, I begin with an in-depth consultation to understand their needs and preferences. I then tailor the design process to reflect their personality and lifestyle, incorporating their feedback at every stage to create a space that truly feels like home.

Personal Interests and Insights

Outside of architecture and design, I have a passion for travel and art history.

Exploring new places and cultures fuels my creativity and broadens my perspective.

My travels allow me to experience different architectural styles and design philosophies firsthand. This exposure influences my work, enabling me to blend various elements into cohesive, innovative designs.

A memorable experience that shaped my approach to design was a summer internship in Bitossi – one of the biggest companies in décor and tableware, in Italy. Working alongside master craftsmen, I learned the importance of attention to detail and the value of combining traditional techniques with modern innovations.
